About this test

A Urine Routine Examination has three parts: a physical inspection (colour, clarity, specific gravity), a chemical strip test (pH, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, nitrites, leukocytes), and a microscopic look at the sediment for red cells, white cells, casts, bacteria, and crystals. From a single sample it can flag urinary tract infections, kidney inflammation, undiagnosed diabetes (glucose in urine), early diabetic kidney damage (protein in urine), kidney stones (crystals and blood), liver problems (bilirubin), and dehydration. It is part of every routine annual check-up, every antenatal visit, every pre-operative workup, and the immediate workup of burning urination, blood in urine, lower-back pain, fever of unknown origin, or persistent fatigue. Same-day reporting means a UTI can be confirmed and antibiotic treatment started during the same visit.

Preparation

Collect a clean mid-stream sample, preferably the first morning urine. Wash the genital area first; let the initial stream pass into the toilet, then collect the middle portion in the sterile container we provide. Women should avoid the test during menstruation if possible.
