About this test

This simple test checks whether glucose is present in the urine, where in health there should be none. The kidneys normally reabsorb all the sugar filtered from the blood, but once the blood glucose climbs above roughly 180 mg/dL the renal threshold is crossed and the excess spills into the urine — so a positive result is most often an early clue to undiagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes. Doctors order it as a quick, inexpensive screen during routine health check-ups, in patients reporting the classic warning signs of high sugar (excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, or recurrent skin and urinary infections), and as part of the standard antenatal package, where it helps flag gestational diabetes. It is read here as part of the routine urine examination using a reagent dipstick, reported from negative through trace to 4+. A few important caveats shape how the result is interpreted: a normal blood sugar can still give a positive reading in renal glycosuria, a harmless lowered-threshold condition, while a falsely high blood glucose may not show in the urine if the threshold has not yet been breached. For this reason urine sugar is never used alone to diagnose or monitor diabetes — it is always confirmed alongside a fasting or random blood glucose and, where needed, an HbA1c. With diabetes now extremely common across Kathmandu and the wider Nepali population, this dipstick remains a useful first signal that prompts the proper blood-based confirmation rather than a final answer in itself.

Preparation

No special preparation is needed. For a screening sample we usually ask for urine passed about two hours after a meal, as this is when sugar is most likely to spill over. Bring the sample in a clean container, or collect it at the lab.
